If Ctl-Alt-Del / Shutdown doesn't work - I find a hammer really gets the job done in record time ... lol.

Kill un needed services and any programs you are running first. If you are not connected to a printer uninstall the print spooler and things you do not need.

I used to use the switch on my power strip. Works instantly everytime. I found that the XPnis of Gates Punishes you for that when you turn the system on by wasting time scanning files.

Fastest way is press and hold the "off" button for 5 seconds but you pay the penalty when you next boot up because it will take longer file footering to close all the stuff that was bypassed on the quick close down.

You can get some good suggestions if you google the question.

My suggestions include:
Close off all programs first.
Use hibernate instead of shutdown
Change Automatic Updates to notify instead of automatic.
--(Windows sometimes do its updating during shutdown)
Disable page file clearing (more advanced. do a search for more information, as I do not know the steps at this time).

Fastest is to shut down your computer using the on/off button or unplugging it. Otherwise, click on start, turn off computer and select, "turn off".
