all answers on here say its safe - it is within reason but....
defrag works by "picking up" bits of randomly spread data and "placing it" next to a relevant piece of data - so that the computer is not searching all over the hard drive for information-its all in one place making access times much shorter.
imagine, defrag "picks up" a vital file for running windows
["pick up" is cutting it from the hard drives non volatile memory ,and holds it in ram until it finds a suitable place on the hard drive to relocate it]
half a block down the road, a construction company inadvertently hits a power line and knocks out the electricity to your neighborhood!
that vital file was held in ram! without power - bye bye data!
its a long shot i know but -no its not 100% safe [unless you have a U.P.S. ?

If you are using a proper defragment programme it will be OK
reading your question I was wondering if you had gone on the net and were wondering about some of the free checking scans offered be extremely wary some of these scans would be better named scaMs as they do a free scan & say they were able to remove some threats but can only remove the rest if you upgrade for which they want your money very often if you run another check of your own there are no faults but do run defrag+checks from known sources

It is safe and recommended to ensure the integrity of your hard drive.
Scan disk checks your files for issues, such as wrong size reported and wrong filenames and such.
Defrag reorganizes your hard drive so that your files are accessed quicker.
The frequency depends on what you do with your computer. If you have a big hard drive, it may take some time to defrag, depending on how much disk space you are already using.
I suggest at least once a moth. More if you do a lot of downloading/deleting.

Disk cleanup is essential if you use your computer on the Internet often. Lots of unnecessary file build up and bog down performance. Defragmentation has a Analyze tab that will tell you if you need to run defragmentation. Usually it will say you should if you have been downloading and installing new programs/software. I clean disk daily and have to defrag once a week.

Not only safe but mandatory for your computer. You should use disk cleanup first, then use disk defragmentor. Yes is is safe because it does not remove programs, but the installation programs that is used. Once you install a program, you do not need the installation program and it should be deleted.
The temporary internet files should be deleted as well as the installation programs. Once a file or program has been installed, the initial installation program is no longer needed.
Performing defragmentation is paramount to compiling your files and will allow your system to utilize its ultimate speed.

Disk checking is ok to check your HD for bad sectors and repair it. Defragmenting should only be done once a month. Frequent defragmentation may cause you to lose data.
