Well Ram (Random Access Memory.
RAM consists of many capacitors and transistors. A capacitor and a transistor are paired together to make a memory cell. The capacitor represents one "bit" of data, the transistor is able to change the state of the capacitor to either a 0 or a 1. the Zero's and ones when read in a sequence represent the code which the computer understands. This is called binary data because there is only two states that the capacitor can be in.
DIMM
Short for dual in-line memory module, a small circuit board that holds memory chips. A single in-line memory module (SIMM) has a 32-bit path to the memory chips whereas a DIMM has 64-bit path. Because the Pentium processor requires a 64-bit path to memory, you need to install SIMMs two at a time. With DIMMs, you can install memory one DIMM at a time.
Hope This helps.

Considering that you have an old laptop and have some speed issues here is the short and simple. Ram allows you to run your Operating System and whatever programs you use. 768mb isn't that much but then again you may not need more. The HDD on the other hand is used for storage but will limit the performance of your computer if you have it full, fragmented, or if its a slow HDD. Therefore what you may have to ask is if what you currently have adequate for what you use it for. A compelling reason to obtain more RAM would be if you used multiple resource hungry programs on at the same time. And for the HDD would be if you tend to use significant space to store all your work. Also its always a good idea to have a minimum of 15% free space on your HDD. Once it drops from there you have major performance drawback since the computer is continuously struggling to find information on your HDD .

For PC, they are the same. PC3200 indicates the speed. 512Mb indicates the size. More here:

They are one and the same by your discriptions there, except theres no details on the 2nd 1 as to its speed or type.
