I don't recommend it -- most 98se machines don't have enough power to make the leap to XP and maintain performance.

Unfortunately there is no practical way to upgrade win98SE to XP over the Internet. You will have to purchase it. But rest assured, that the installation of XP is way simpler to install that win98se, win95, or even Win Millennium. for Win XP, all one needs to do is pop the CD into ROM, restart the PC, and follow the easy instructions(as it will tell you while installing). Should you have anymore questions, my email address is crush92408@yahoo.com....Hope I helped in some way!!!

Do not do this without the following hardware:

1ghz(at least) CPU
512mb(at least) RAM
40gb HDD (As small as 10 will do but it's not fun)

If your PC does not meet those minimums, continue enjoying 98 more than we enjoy XP ;) While it is true that a 500mhz will run XP I find it frustratingly sluggish. I'm always doing 5 things or more at once though.

The recommendation of Linux is a good one. Ubuntu linux is free and very very simple to install.

download Fedora or Ubuuntu linux instead. A machine that ran 98 wont have the neccesary horse power to play with XP nice.

Not legally. One of your better options is to pick up an OEM non-branded XP home pack off of eBay.

EDIT: I have been running XP Pro for 4 year on a P-III 500Mhz computer (Dell GX1) with 512mb. It runs just fine.
