The new versions of Adobe Reader are only compatible with Windows XP. Is there an older version that is compatible with Windows 98?

From a purely philosophical perspective (please, try it) ... wouldn't you think if an "improvement" to software you use is unveiled, the software would require LESS from you to function, rather than MORE (be it RAM, hard drive space, a newer operating system, enabled scripts like Javascript, etc)??

To just use Yahoo as an example, the new Yahoo Mail beta isn't compatible with an older OS like Windows 98. The ~existing~ (pre-beta) Yahoo Mail REQUIRES you to have a security vulnerability like Javasript enabled in order for Yahoo Mail to function.

These new demands on the user and his/her system just seems counterintuitive with the concept of "improvement".

CDs still work fine, but my computer doesn't read DVDs and then freezes whenever I just try to play a movie. I've tried different disks, I've cleaned the lens and drive, and nothing seems to work.

Also, once my computer freezes, I can't even turn it off. Everything becomes frozen, and I have to pull the plug out of the wall just to be able to reboot.

This problem seems to have come out of the blue - everything was working fine recently. I changed a Firewire card to a USB 2.0 card, and just bought a new 20" widescreen monitor. I don't believe either of these should have an effect on the DVD drive, but what do I know. I haven't used the DVD drive in a few weeks so I can't say for sure that it stopped working before or after either of these changes.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, using Windows XP Pro.

I was going though some of the new features that the new IE has and now supports, some of the ideas I think are decent on it, such as the new phishing feature as well as security updates (which are always handy); there are other things I really don't like about it though such as the tabbed windows option (Its actually strange this was not an upgrade to IE 6, as yahoo and many other companies built third party scripts to do this in IE). I felt the new UI was a bit much although it does look somewhat better (in my opinion).

My favorite thing I found that I liked about the new IE is that it supposedly disables (nearly) all active x plug ins to decrease security threats, I have a feeling this will cut down on the amount of malware that users get, however the option to turn active x content is still on, so it would require the user to be a bit educated to help decrease the risk.
