My 2000 grand am makes a loud, even, high pitched squeal upon starting. Can only hear it from outside of the car, not when driving. It is a separate sound from the evenly running motor. Serpentine belt was replaced about 6 months ago. Just started this yesterday. Is there anything i should be looking for under there to narrow down the problem before i take her to the car dr?

The front passenger door lock is broken so the pin will not pull up I can't open the door with the key. Will the car pass NJ inspection?? Anyone know if DMV checks the doors?

ps. I would of fixed the door myself if there was a way to swing it open at least one time. But because of that, I can't even get to the screws to take our the door panels off and access the inner assembly.

Thanks in advance.

Battery or alternator problem?

It started last week, i was parked listening to the radio for about 45 minutes, i tried to turn the car and it wouldn't, the lights were on, the radio was on but the car wouldn't turn on. I got a jump and it started right away. I went to two Auto Zone's and got two different answers #1 said i had a bad battery #2 made me turn on the car and said my battery was fine, so i left it at that.

Now today for lunch, same thing happens, after 45 minutes parked with the radio on, i felt the car/radio losing power, i tried to turn on the car but was not able to.

Does it sound like i have a battery or alternator problem?

Thnaks in advance.

I have an Eddie Bauer edition 1991 automatic Ford explorer that I seem to have broken the 4wd on. It won't disengage from the front wheels. I don't know if it's only one wheel or both right now. When I press the handy little button I have to disengage the 4wd, the light turns off (signaling that the 4wd has been successfully disengaged), and I hear it disengaging from the back wheels. Unfortunately, when I try to drive, I find that it is still engaged. Obviously, I'd like to avoid taking it to a garage if I can. Any idea on where I should start poking around?

I usually change the oil every 3k to3500 miles. It is usually still translucient but a little darker. I have only driven 50 miles or less on the new oil and it is already black. Should I worry? I realize that every mile I get at this point is a gift from God.

I want to purchase the oxygen sensor online because it's cheaper, but I am not sure if it's the upstream or downstream. The car seems like it doesn't want to accelerate like it should. How do I know which oxygen sensor is causing problems?

I had a 1951 Plymouth, 32.5mpg, a1984 305 4v 9 pass. Parisienne, 43.5mpg, hwy. a 2000 Impala, 32.5 mpg, a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis, loaded to the max., 33.5 mpg hwy., and now they are bragging about shoe boxes that get about 30 mpg. Sure I owned some real guzzlers but the point is the auto companies know how to build economical cars but there must be some reason why they don't. What is it?

I own a 99 toyota Solera, the engine light came on about one mile from my house, when I got home I heard gurgling noises coming from under the hood. There was no water or coolant on the ground but the repair shop is telling me the radiator is leaking and I need a new radiator. Could it be something else?

The car has been sitting in my driveway since last december. It's only been started twice since then, but both times it started fine. I'm getting my license soon, so I need to know what things i'm probably going to have to do to get it to go. I already know it needs a battery. What else will I probably need? [The car was working great before we stopped using it, and we never had problems with it]

My very reliable 1999 Ford Contour SE (front-wheel drive) has taken a turn for the worse this week! It started out with a bad tire, then a wire, plugs, serpentine belt, all at once. When the tire blew, I took it to a reliable mechanic in town (recommended by several people) and he told me that the tire rod ends need to be replaced soon but I can wait a few weeks until payday. The next day it wouldn't start properly, so I took it to the mechanic that services all my employer's vehicles. He fixed everything (fuel and air filters, new plugs, a bad wire, and a bad belt) but told me that when I go home next week (I'm away at college) I should have one of the wheel bearings replaced. I have 117,000 miles on my car, and until now, I have not needed any big repairs. I know the filters and that are just a matter of maintenance, but are the tire rod ends and bad wheel bearing a sign of a bigger problem with my axles or something? Any estimates on cost to fix it?

I hit a curb going about 20-30 miles per hour. It completely bent my rim, popped my tire. I replaced the tire with the spare and there is still really loud grinding or rubbing going on. It appears that I ruptured the CV boot, and possibly bent, broke other things. Does this sound right and does anybody know how much this stuff would cost me?

I have a 2001 Honda Civic

I think its the fuel pump, but it also might just be a hose. This happened to me before when a hose came loose near the fuel pump. I'm not getting any pressure when I open the gas cap. When I step on the gas two quickly the car almost stalls.
