You can go to Autozone, and they will hook up a code reader, which will then pinpoint which sensor is bad (for free). My Ford has 4-the reader gave a code pinpointed the bad sensor (right side, upstream) which I quickly replaced with no more problems. I bought a Bosch sensor for about $40. Remember to disconnect a battery cable for a few seconds to allow the fault code to be cleared from the computer.

What was the exact code that the Mechanic was getting.
The odds are that if you're feeling a performance problem AND you're sure it's the O2 sensor that's causing it and not something like a clogged catalytic converter.
The upstream O2 sensor is the more likely one. However, this assumes that the diagnostic is correct and he's POSTIVE that it's the O2 sensor that is causing the acceleration problem.

Did your mechanic hook your car up to an OBD II reader to get the code, or is he just using his "limitless" knowledge of cars? Since you do not know if you need the before cat, or after cat sensor, I am guessing that your mechanic was just guessing! You need the actual code, and then you need to find out exactly what that code means. It might not even be the O2 sensor.
Bad O2 sensors don't generally cause driveability problems anoyhow. Mostly gas mileage problems.
Hope this helps.

If you have around 60,000 miles or more on the car, it is probably the oxygen sensor. If there are two, it's better to replace them both. The sensor helps the computer decide how to adjust the air/fuel mix, so yes it would affect acceleration.

Just replace them both if one is out the other will most likely go out shortly. Now if they are really expensive ask them which one it is or take it to Auto Zone if you have one near you and have them hook it back up to the computer and tell you which one it is if there is more than one. . Mine was the O2 sensor but then still had problems with acceleration. My Catalytic Converter plugged up. 100 bucks at the local muffler shop fixed it. Good Luck.
