I usually change the oil every 3k to3500 miles. It is usually still translucient but a little darker. I have only driven 50 miles or less on the new oil and it is already black. Should I worry? I realize that every mile I get at this point is a gift from God.

the oil getting dark real quickly is a sign of bad piston rings, and oil overheating. Oil tends to overheat when the crankshaft main, and connecting rod bearings tend to get worn past their tolerances.

You can try using an engine restore product to help save the engine until you either replace the engine, or the whole vehicle.

260k miles, I'm impressed.

Chances are that the oil that you're using has high detergency factors in it. This is good. The oil turning dark fast is a sign that the oil is doing it's job and is cleaning your crankcase for you. Engines at this age usually need a professionally done de-sludging, to get the toxic waste that's accumulated in your oil pan and lubrication ports out. Maybe you went too far on your last oil change or have been using a cheaper kind of oil in the past. Also, if you are using fuels (as you should) that have high detergent ratings, your engine is trying to internally cleanse itself. Don't worry, Be happy.

You are lucky that you have gotten that many miles. I have a Ranger with 212000. I owe it to changing my oil religiously as well.

At this point I would just drive it till it dies. Oil darkening quickly could be something, or nothing. Doesn't mean oil is bad, that's for sure. Just keep on changing it every 3000 and see if you can make it to 300000!

you could drop the pan on the next oil change...clean the pickup screen and clean the sludge out of the pan.... it will help a little.... plus all oil is NOT the same...some are darker even though the vecosity is the same...as long as you keep changing it at the intervals you mentioned you'll be fine
