Modern tune-ups usually consist of checking the OBD computer for any components that have failed, and replaceing them. A lot of newer cars don't have distributors, caps, and some don't even have wires(they use individual coils nounted through the valve cover). When everything else checks out, then new spark plugs are installed, preferably OEM or better. Replacing wires on modern cars is usually a waste of money, unless one or more have been damaged when they were removed or installed to get to the plugs. Most modern cars don't need timing adjustments, but the operating computer needs to be scanned to determine whether or not it is functioning properly. What kind of car do you have?? What year??

Todays cars "tune-ups" consist of spark plugs, wires, air and fuel filter change, cooling system flush, and a computer diagnostic check.
There really isn't any "tuning" to do since all newer cars have computer controlled timing.
Tuning up your car is basically preventative maintenance. Spark plugs and wires wear out over time. Coolant breaks down, filters get clogged etc. Take care of it before it causes a problem and it saves you money in the long run.

Whats up I work for Autozone and I can help you with this question. A tune up all depends on the year of your car and what "kind" of tune up you want to do. Older cars 60's-early 70's are done differently that mid 70's-early 90's as well as late 90's to now. Basic tune up consist of distributer cap and rotor, spark plugs and spark plug wires. Whatever filters need to be changed ie:oil, air, fuel also the lesser known pcv valve and breather filter, its a good time to change these. Then you have your mileage to consider, more miles means things can be "added" to your tune up; transmission filter, belts, radiator flush, older car points and condenser, newer car oxygen sensors. Also tune ups are a good time to check fluids. Hope this answered your question if you need more help go to your local auto store or to the website and they can provide you with a wealth of knowledge.

1.Spark plugs provide fire. 2. Spark Plug wires provides routing for spark to flow. 3.Distributor Cap distributes spark to wires. 4. Distributor rotor gives spark to Cap. 5. Air/Fuel filters cleans air and fuel. 6.PCV valve vents crank case. 7. Oil change. 8. Adjust timing if needed. 9.Some cars need Oxygen sensors reads air/fuel mixture. This should give you what you asked for.
