Maintenance & Repairs - March 2007

I've got a 2001 Ford Focus SE with 69K miles that I’ve had from mile 5 and maintained perfectly. I took it to the shop for an oil change and that night it leaked oil, just one drop, for the first time ever. Each day it got to be a little more, so I took it back and they cleaned the engine to find out where the leak was coming from. That night it leaked so bad it was like a small stream, but it was no longer oil colored but, like vegetable oil. At first they said it was probably the power steering fluid. Now they are telling me its the oil pan gasket. Why is the fluid now nearly clear? Why would it have started leaking the day it was at the shop? Did they sabotage my car so that I'd have to pay the $370 to fix it?

I'm upgrading my air intake and air filter on my turbo eclipse. Its an automatic so I'm not gonna do major upgrades but wanted to know if I'm going to feel anything after installation.
Also, would I notice a difference with a 6-12lbs torque increase? If yes, how so? Thanks!

It started it about a week ago, and it does it as I'm driving. If I apply my brakes it stops. It gets worse as I turn my wheels, and I also noticed that when you put your car in "park" that usually the engine stops running so high, well mine sounds the same. What's going on?

I have a 93 Taurus with a 3.8 liter engine and 130,000 miles that looks good and has new tires and water pump. About one week ago my engine was running great when I ran out of gas. Because my fuel indicator (although low) did not seem real low to me I tried to start it up twice. Couldn't start it up -- Turned out that I was just low on gas. Ever since that time, I have had a pretty loud noise in the engine (sounds something like I would imagine an oil dipstick would sound if it was whacking hard and repeatedly against the hood-- I have only driven it about 5 miles since then.) My mechanic thought that maybe it was a rocker arm at the top of the engine and that maybe it could be fixed. However, he took off the top and all of the rocker arms look real good and he says the engine looks real good. Now he is saying that maybe it is a lifter (not too bad) or a connecting rod (not worth fixing). Can someone tell me what they think the problem is and whether it is worth fixing.

After changing my oil, my oil pressure gauge shows that there is no oil. What's wrong? I replaced the plug and filter, put in 6 quarts of oil into a 97 Jeep Cherokee and I let it sit for a while, started it up and my oil pressure showed 0. There were no leaks so I don't think it's a gasket. Any suggestions of what might be wrong with it. I started it and let it run for a while thinking that it just needed to build up some pressure, and it still showed 0 this morning. I guess I'm confused because I've never had this problem before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1992 Ford Explorer. For the past seven months or so, it has been missing, backfiring, and has been sluggish. However, it will be fine one day and do all of these weird things the next. I took it to a Ford dealer shop and they ran a diagnostic test on it and replaced the mass flow sensor. That didn't correct the problem. Any ideas on what could be causing it to backfire, miss, etc...?

When I started my Ranger this morning it made a clacking noise and stalled quickly. After giving it some gas for about a minute it was running, but seemed not at full speed and the clacking noise was still going. I looked under the hood and the top pulley (the highest one up) was starting and stopping about every 5-10 seconds, which was the cause of the noise. I still drove it to school today and it seemed to run normal Anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks

A year ago, i heard some squeaky sounds from my truck when i started it, and few minutes later, it would mellow down. I got it fixed. NO more noises. Until a year later, the noises came back. I went to some mechanics. One mechanic said it was the belt. Another mechanic mentioned that my belt was new, so it should be something other than the belt. Mechanic #2 wanted to dismantle the car to be sure of what the problem is. Who should i listen to? Im on a tight budget so im torn. THANKS!!!

I've been having issues on and off for the last two months with my 2001 Buick LeSabre. Long story short, I'm noticing now that my steering wheel is vibrating when turned, particularly at lower speeds. Also, the power steering doesn't seem to be functioning as well as it used to (e.g. it's more difficult to turn the steering wheel)

I had all the fluid levels checked in my car and they were fine.

I'd love ideas about what you think may be causing this and, most importantly, how much it might cost me to have it fixed (money is a concern, which is why I haven't had it checked out fully just yet!).

I have a 2004 Monte Carlo LS and I dont have the money even to get an estimated on it right now. Somebody said it could be the tire belts. It doesnt grind when I stop the car like the rotors and it doesnt make the noise that a wheel bearing usually does when its going out, although that doesnt mean thats not what it is. Anybody have any guesses, I was going to change all my tires myself, but I dont want to waste my time if thats prob. not what it is. Thanks..

I went to start my car this morning - when I turned the key, it made a little sound and then, nothing.

So I shut off the ignition, and then tried again. No sound at all. I don't think it's a case of the battery being dead, because absolutely nothing happened (whenever my battery's died, it just won't turn over). My power locks also did not work. They key was able to turn, but that was it.

Did I blow a fuse? What else could have happened? I have plenty of gas in the car, and it's been working with absolutely no problems lately.

If you have an idea of what happened, then how can I fix it ... do I need to take it to a mechanic, or can I fix it myself?

Thanks.
