Well they are close HD is high detergent means it keeps your motor clean inside. If you use it all the time fine, but if you don't then start on an old motor it will make it smoke. This is because the detergent cleans the tarnish and carbon deposits out of your engine leaving more area for engine oil to get through letting oil get past rings to piston.

This should settle the matter, at least with respect to using HD 30 in a lawn mower. The container of oil that came with my Yard Man mower from the manufacturer was SAE HD 30.

HD oils are Heavy Duty- meaning they have extra additives for extended high temp and conditons, but other than that, they're the same...the extra cost for HD oils isn't warranted for use in a lawn mower, but it's fine to use if that's what you have handy!
By the way, HD is not an industry standard term, and stands for whatever individual manufacturers want it to...most HD oils are by the manufacturers tag, heavy duty. It's not an opinion, just read the labels.

HD does not mean heavy duty. It means high detergent. It might or might not be SAE. SAE is a set of standards that oil has to meet to be certified for cars.
