ok so my parents won't buy me a car and my grandfather left a white '97-ish doge pick up. the only thing is it needs a new transmittion and probally also a paint job because the paints chippin off. how much do u think a transmittion and paint job would cost. would it be smarter/cheaper to try an buy another car????

close to $1000. new. a cheap macco paint job arounrd $300.

Depends if automatic or manual, but in general terms about $1500. Forget the paint job as it does not make the vehicle go. If it runs OK then fix the transmission and run it until you save enough money to get what you want and can afford.

if you have any friends or family members that work on cars go to car-part.com to find the tranny that will be the cheapest way to go maybe around $500 you didnt say what year or type of truck so thats a guess (thats what i paid for my tranny)and yes a macco paint job not the greatest but ok and cheap

It would not be a good idea to start pouring that kind of money into a non working vehicle. Despite what anyone says, there's no way to tell if the rest of the truck is OK without driving it and you could be sinking cash into that thing forever.

well how many miles are on it...you gotta take that into consideration....the paint job is gonna cost a little bit as well...but the transmission will most like run 1000-1900.....

if I where in You shoes,I will keep it ,no matter what.

in the long run will be cheaper,the old man knew ,what he was buying.

check the transmission fluid level and drive tested(insuranced)
take it to mechanic for brakes visual inspection.
