I was thinking of modifying a Karman Ghia with a flat-6, upgraded brakes, etc...and then I thought...what if you put the body sheel of a Ghia over the 911...

As is blowing off people "normally" isn't enough, I would love this form of stealth...

The reviews of the Boxster and Cayman have been glowing lately, with the subtle suggestion that these mid-engined cars are better balanced, better handling, better all-around sportscars than the 911. The Carrera GT supercar is also mid-engined. Is it only a matter of time until the engine in the 911 finds itself on the other side of the rear axle?

They're all converging in the same price range right now, which makes for interesting comparisons. I have my own opinion on the subject, and my mechanic has given me his answer; but just for fun, how about you other P-car fans? The ultimate air-cooled monster Porsche (that refuses to depreciate)? The faster-than-you-need but still civilized 996TT, with its threat of high maintenance costs? The rough but rewarding, track-focused GT3? Or the thoroughly modern, depreciation-prone but still under warranty base 997 Carrera? Throw purchase price out the window... which would you want to own and why?

Miss having a classic to kick around in and have been thinking of one of the two. This would be my first porsche. Any ideas or opinions on them? Common troubles, likes, dislikes, favorite models and so forth. Not neccessarily looking for a high end collector, race car, or a garage/trailer queen. I want something me and the girl can jump in and cruise the back highways of Wisconsin in.
Also, what are some of the popular/recommended upgrades and/or add-ons for these two? Engine swaps?
And before it's mentioned...yes, I do know it's an old car. Things will need to be replaced/fixed/maintained. Not afraid at all. Used to overhaul engines and have well over 100 rebuilds under the belt. Fabrication isn't out of the question either. I'm leaning toward a lower $ car (not a clunker) just so I can fix it up and make it my own. I do prefer the cardboard to the recliner, lol.

In testing, when they were done with the Cayman, the engineers at Porsche found they had a better car than the 911...

Is the factory making a mistake in keeping the Cayman sort of ham-strung? I own a 83' 911, which I love, but the new Cayman is 21st Century Porsche, par excellence.
Porsche sold the 928 before, the Carrera GT, and soon the Panamerica...

Why hold back?

I heard that the first few years(up to models of year 2000) they had problems, that later the Porsche enginers have elimated all those problems and began producing a perfect state of the art german machine in engine toughness & superiority.
What year is Porsche Boxster became like that & what was the problems before that got corrected ?

Other than the Porsche name, it is basically the same as the Touareg. Too bad us Canadians can't have the V10 version!

How hard would it be to throw on a turbo for a 944 auto?

2007-03-21 11:36:04 · 5 answers · asked by Anonymous

I'm thinking about buying a Porsche 944. It's a 1987, no turbo 2.5L engine, seems like it has a few defects, but the only thing that seems major is the power steering system is shot. I already have quotes on what it will cost to get it into working shape, but I'm looking for an answer from a Porsche enthusiast. I am wondering if this car is going to be cool looking, but is that all I'm going to be able to do with it, because it will be in the shop all of the time? How easy is it to get parts for this car? How easy is it to work on, how expensive is it to have worked on. Any info is helpful. I already looked at Kelly Blue Book, and NADA values for the car, but what is a good deal for the car in your opinion? Thanks.
