Get up and go is really not the strong suite of the 944. It's strengths are balance and handling, and with that, if skillfully driven to maintain momentum, it can keep up with some much more powerful cars.
The best course of performance improvement for any car tends to be improving the driver skill level, since this is almost always the most limiting factor for car performance. And from there, items to maximize the car's strength tend to provide the best bang for the buck.
But simply looking for more get up and go, while dealing with the limitations of the car... first look at tires. A good performance tire will give more grip for all aspects, including acceleration. To maximize get up and go, look for something with great grip, and pay attention to the weight of the tires (tires are rotating unsprung mass, saving a pound each here can make a big difference). Related to that, invest in some lightweight rims... saving a few more pounds here could be similar to a 4-5hp gain in terms net affect on power to weight ration.
Next, put the car on a diet - trim any and all non essential items. Replacing the factory power seats with a good race shell could net you just over 50 pounds a seat! Removing the AC and all related ducting comes close to 100 pounds! And so on.
After that, there are probably a few small things you can approach with the engine to make small gains in power - though overall, Porsche did not leave alot of the table and you should be aware of the tradeoffs you'll make (just as the earlier suggestions here trade comfort for performance).
DME Chip - there are performance chips available. Most of them are good, though do your research as not all are. By advancing the spark and requiring premium gas, the remapping can usually gain a couple hp, and make nice improvements to the power curve.
Exhaust - can be especially effective when combined with a chip that is mapped to take advantage of a system with less back pressure. Though the total gains for both are probably in the range of 5-10hp. It's not alot, but it is a gain, and probably the only "low hanging fruit."
There are countless other things to do, but heading down that path will quickly cost more money than the car cost, or is probably worth (and if you want that, you'd be better off looking at a 944 Turbo that has alot more potential for finding more power).

im tired of people dogging the 944 its a perfectly balanced car. kyle m and paul s are right on the money. the 944 strong points are not in acceleration. but the 944 turbo was the car in its day along with the corvette. also you cant compare a 944 to a 911 its like night and day. performance parts i had special headers, exhuast, timing advanced, bigger injectors, and fabricated my cold air intake. Man my car could take corners better than my vette.

the best mod would be to sell it and buy a 951 (944 turbo). Theyre faster, far more moddable, and not all that much more expensive.
then again, if you just want high HP, the 944 isnt the car for you. 944s are very well balanced track cars. If you wont be tracking the car, might as well just go buy something cheap and american if you want lots of power

I agree with others in that a turbo is more mod friendly. The one I've been itching to do, is not that hard. Porsche made a race car version for their Cup series, they sold approx. 150 for the street world wide. Cup Cars have just a little more power, slightly larger modified turbo. When I did car sales we had a customer with a cup car, undetuned to race car specs, and she was Viper beating fast. Find stock clean 951 and modify it to cup car specs race series version and you will have a killer sleaper 951.....Just search Yahoo on 944 cup car to find out how they differ from an TurboS. I'm over budgeting with clean 944 parts total cost around $18K.

If your in a rush for 0-60 times, then you need another car besides a Porsche 944.
A Mustang would be a good start for taking something out for a good beating and thrashing...

Most people do not need to modify a Psch944. But I guess if you want to buy it, someone will sell it. Looks like the Throttle Body or Intake can be ported or polished. N-o2 kit would add some pep.
gold spinner rims might make it look faster, that is a heck of a automobile as it is.
