The "S" designation is (and has been) used by Porsche to designate an upgraded model. In the case of the Boxster, the "S" includes a larger engine with greater power output, larger and wider wheels, bigger brakes, upgraded suspension, and some minor upgrades to the trim.

The "S" is faster. If performance is not a key concern, then the "S" version is probably not a concern. However, if you were to look at what it would cost in aftermarket upgrades to bring a standard Boxster upto the Boxster S, you'd find it would cost 3-4 times more than the cost differnce between the two cars (and it still wouldn't cover a couple of the biggest differences). While the cost difference can be substantial, it is well worth the cost difference IF the performance aspect is key to your buying decision.

And to the previous poster - obviously not someone that has any real experience with Porsches as they are among the more reliable cars on the market. Though repairs can be expensive when needed.

They are based on the same chassis and body. The main difference is the engine, with some other slight differences. Also, the Boxster S is build in Germany, while the Boxter is imported to Germany.

Why the price difference? Porsche engines are designed for high power, but are good for daily driving. The Boxster S has a larger engine with a higher output. The performance of the Boxster S is near that of the 911. The added cost of the more powerful motor, improved exhaust and suspension and production in Germany are the main reasons why you will pay more for a Boxster S.

If you are looking to purchase a Boxster, you should try to balance the additional cost vs the added performance. You'll know if it is worth it.

Good luck!

The difference is a secondary issue. What makes them similar is an outrageous unthinkable ability to run a few hours (and if you are lucky - a few days!) without a single repair!
