First I want to correct nigelshiftright's comments on the RMS leak. Changing the engine is not a fix because the cause of the leak is in the design of the engine itself. Even a new engine can leak. The fix is to change the seal. $1K repair for the seal vs. $12K+ for a new engine. Engine replacement is necessary in cases where the crankshaft itself is out of spec and will keep on destroying new seals soon after you replace them.


On to your answer...The usual advice is to buy the newest one you can afford. Since you are limiting yourself up to 2002, get a 2002!

Ask yourself what are you looking for in a Porsche and how much are you willing to spend? Daily driver? Weekend fun car? Chick magnet? True sports car? Collectible classic?

Daily driver - used 996 (MY2002 got a facelift and more hp) or used 986S
Weekend fun car - consider a cabriolet (996 or 986S)
Chick magnet - don't know the answer to this one. I'm not a chick and they're unpredictable in what they like.
Collectible classic - a 993, preferably a 1997 or 1998 993S (wide body, not very many made). Newer ones are actually more expensive than the 996 that replaced it.
True sports car - a 996 GT3
Good-deal-if you-can-afford-it- a used but not abused 996 Turbo. Prices are coming down.

What about budget?
$20K or less? - only old 986 here
$20K to $40K? - 993, 986 and 996
$40K to $60K? - 986, 987, 996, 996 Turbo (maybe)
$60K+? - 986 Turbo, 996-based GT3

Until Porsche solves the goddamn rear mail seal leak problem on the 996, I'd have to say stick with the 993 models. Not all 996s leak, but if they do, there is only one cure....only one....and that's a new engine (which you really don't want to have to pay for).

this depends on what you want in a car, if for a dowager a 968 convertible might be the best bet. if you want to profile a 944s4 will get the job done but right .if you want to rip a air cooled 911 with a chip, throttle body, and tuned exhaust is the way to go [what i would pick] be aware that a lot of abused stone crabs are out there especially on the inter-net your best bet for a solid car will be from a dealer who sold the car new and all and i mean all service records are available[check for lapses in dates] and then a complete independent inspection.
note don't get blinded by car lust or ridicules claims[ these can cost and or kill you]

totally depends on what you want out of the car, and what you like in general.

if you mean in terms of appreciation in value, the GT1 is your best bet by far.

if youre talking speed: dollar ratio, its probably the 996, or if you go higher end, the 996 turbo.

if youre talking about the purest/scariest driving experiance, its the 993 and 996 GT2s.

if youre talking overall fastest, its either the GT1 or the carrera GT.

if you mean most reliable, then the 996 is probably the best choice.

if you mean most flashy, then its the GT1 or carrera GT.

if you mean most comfortable, the 928.
you need to be more specific.
