The Boxster itself had already been around a couple years when Porsche introduced the Boxster S. Since the initial introduction there have been a few upgrades along the way. The upgrades have generally been to improve performance. As such the newest Boxster S will perform at a higher level than the first versions... but in terms of reliability, all of the Boxsters are very reliable cars and I have not seen any significant difference.
In contrast to the previous answerer, I've never seen a Porsche WITH major problems. I've seen older cars with 400k+ miles that are still used as daily drivers and have had no rebuilds or similar major work in their life time. I have attended many track events where the cars have been run under the stress of that environment (and often in high heat), and the cars perform without problem! Of course, this does rely on keeping the car properly maintained. And the use of knowledgable Porsche mechanics would be highly suggested as well ('less you wind up in a spot with an engine covered in oil and someone having to figure out what specialty tools they have to buy to complete a job).

I work in a garage, and I have yet to see a Porsche without problems. If used as a weekend driver and it has the proper maintance done, it will last a little wile, but if its used as a daily driver, I would expect no more then 150 000km out of the thing. Last one I saw, the engine was covered in oil and it had major engine overheating, misfireing, and a few other engine problems, and it had a clutch problem. With all the special tools required we could only preform the clutch job. It was a dealer repair for the rest, without the shop buying $4000 worth of tools that would be used maybe 3 times a year. I wasn't overly thrilled with any of the ones i've driven /worked on either. They like making things difficult to do.
EDIT - As well as the answer about specialty technicians for Porsche, I 100% agree. I had a tools list of every specialty tool I needed for the engine work that needed to be doen, but it was not worth buying the tools to do the job. If you do end up with a Porsche, take it to a Porsche dealer or Porsche Specific garage. In my area, any vehicle, no matter how well its been maintained, will not last long, usually. The eleiments here usually beat up a vehicle withen a few years. Also, most people in my area are cheap and will only buy an expencive vehicle thinking that since it is expencive it will last forever, and such, they will not put any money into maintance, I'm just going by the ones I've seen, I'm not saying that about the entire company, just the ones I've seen. I'm sure I'm just getting the **** end of the stick on this deal of the ones i've seen, and I'm sure there are some out there with over 400 000mi.
