I'm looking into a job on a survey vessel and the only thing I'm worried about is being so uncomfortable that I can't enjoy my job. There is no specific vessel that I would be working on, so I'm just looking for general information. Also if anyone has anything they would like to share concerning living on an oceanic survey or research vessel I'd love to hear it.

I am new to boating. Just bought a 1971 Arrow Glass Riviera inboard/outboard fiberglass boat. It keeps overheating in the water. It works fine if I attach the water hose. The owner painted over the outboard, so I cant tell what kind of engine I have. The owner says it was a V6 chevy or buick, but every website I look only has OMC, merc, volva-penta, etc. listed as possible engines. Searches for arrow glass manufacturer turn up nothing. I want to replace water pump/impeller but I cant even locate it. Took off the lower unit, but cant seem to see it. Anyone have ideas on how to find a good manual, or how I can tell what kind of engine it is so I can order a manual from iboats.com or something?

I have a 1990 40 hp Evinrude Tracker boat engine that's lower unit has gone bad. I need a working lower unit for it. I could use anything from 1990-1992 unit and anything from 40 - 50 hps as a replacement. I have looked in every conceivable place, but I am coming up empty at this point. Any good ideas out there as to where I might find a good, used lower unit? Thanks!

i asked this question before: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AizS9ebAc7jJFDFBCRI4mRnsy6IX?qid=20070715073244AA83tYD

i took it in and had it fixed. it was the water pump. he also changed out the lube in the crankcase. he ran it for 15 minutes and it was fine. i brought it back and it was running great. i had it going full blast for over 5 minutes then it slowed down and died. the only way it will run now is idle and it stuggles when its in gear becuase after all, all its doing is idleing. i try to give it any gas and it sounds like its bogging down or something and dies. even when its warm i have to choke it to start it. didnt have to before. i checked all the lines and they are fine. gas is new. i didnt have the vent open and the gas can was caved in so i opened the vent and it was still doing it. could that have messed up the carb or something. also, in nuetral it will rev fine but the trottle can only go so far in nuetral- to the start position. any ideas? thanks

For some time I have dreamed about sailing across the Atlantic to Spain, then around the med and back. I was wondering what to expect, what would be needed, how long the crossing would take, when it would be best to cross, where the best deptarture and arrival points would be, estimated costs, what would be needed, anchor restrictions, danger areas, etc.

My plans are to make the passage in a 43'-55' multihull setting out in 4-5 years. As far as the boat goes, what should the boat be outfitted with (i.e. reverse osmosis system, back up generator, spare main, solar/wind generator, etc.)

To open the door to a few more answers, what certifications would be recommended to have prior to my trip?

Thank you in advance.

My Bertram 30 w/ twin Crusaders 454s. Both Engines each run off of 2 4D Battery. On the Starboard side, the 4D runs all the boat DC electronics and appliances. Now Battery, even after being charged has very little juice to crank the starter.

When running, the reading of the Volts is around 12 to under 13, while the other side is reading a strong 13.5 volts.

Is this a battery problem, or is it a charging problem? Also, how do I test the Alternators output to insure she is putting out the proper charge?

A little history, I have owned the boat since 2001. I have replaced the Starboard 4D 2 times, this maybe the 3rd time. When at Anchor for hours, many time the Battery will run low to the point I need to jump with parallel switch to start the Engine. However once started, the Volts would go up to 13.5. Also, at the dock, after being charged, she starts right up. Now, there is not enough juice to start.

Is this normal for a Battery to die that runs all the Electronics / Appliances?

I recently acquired a 34' 1963 Constellation in very rough condition. Although I restore wooden boats for a living, I am concerned if this one is worth my time. All the parts are there, the hull and structure are sound, but it will require extensive work. If it is rare it is worth it - if not the chainsaws will eat it and the mahogany will feed my fireplace this winter. - HELP
