Personal experience has taught me that these boats do go from the shallows to offshore places safely. The wide flat bottom allows the boat to ride bouyantly with a load. This is also what allows it to be safe in deeper water. Because it does not have a deep draft, it tends to ride on the surface rather than cutting through the waves. In many ways this is similar to the theory behind the catamaran designs as well. Riding on the surface allows for easier maneuverability.
