I am new to boating. Just bought a 1971 Arrow Glass Riviera inboard/outboard fiberglass boat. It keeps overheating in the water. It works fine if I attach the water hose. The owner painted over the outboard, so I cant tell what kind of engine I have. The owner says it was a V6 chevy or buick, but every website I look only has OMC, merc, volva-penta, etc. listed as possible engines. Searches for arrow glass manufacturer turn up nothing. I want to replace water pump/impeller but I cant even locate it. Took off the lower unit, but cant seem to see it. Anyone have ideas on how to find a good manual, or how I can tell what kind of engine it is so I can order a manual from iboats.com or something?

With the lower unit removed see the drive shaft stinking up? Down around the bottom of the drive shaft should be a small housing and your impeller is inside. Look at how it curves? When you put the new impeller in spray with some silicon and turn in the correct direction as you push the housing back down and it will curve and slide in.
To really know your engine you will find numbers on the Block. Usually around the Starter. Write down these numbers and call an Auto Parts store, Machinist that rebuild engines or a dealer parts department. Usually they will tell from those numbers. Many used Chevy engines. So, I would guess Chevy first then Ford and last Chrysler (Most Chryslers will be V-8).

Most likely you have a chevy 4.3 litre engine.....that seems to be the most popular in the V-6 model. As far as the outdrive unit. Your best bet is to take the boat to a local marine shop and ask one of the mechanics to look at it for you.....if he knows boats he should be able to tell you what type of outdrive you have. Once you know that, you can order a CLYMER manual online for that particular outdrive and the manual will help you with the water pump issue. Most likely you will also have a water pump on the engine.....ensure it is working properly also. Check your thermostats and all of your hoses for any rotting.

The impellor is bad. It will not pump water.
With the hose attached it forces water thru the pump. Most water systems have 30 to 50 psi
