Sometimes my car will not shift out of park unless I shove something into the "shift lock manual release" hole! I think there's a fuse for this but I have no idea where it's at.....can anyone help me out?

I am looking for a decent people carrier/estate for two adults and 4 kids that has a decent boot. If we have 4 kids we do not want a tiny boot! I can barely fit the pushchair in the ones I've seen, never mind the shopping etc. I live in the UK and want one second hand. Any ideas on the best car to go for?
