Okay so I finally got a new job that is willing to accept my registered partner as my "wife" as far as legally possible.
I have insurance for her through them.
The total amount that they pay out for her to have insurance is added to my taxable income for the year even though I don't actually make the extra.
I do not mind paying the tax on it at all but I calculated how much I will be making next year if I just worked my regular 40hrs a week plus the extra that they pay per year for her insurance. That extra 4800 a year that they pay just barly bumps me up into a higher tax bracket.
I do not know what I should do.
In the long run I cannot tell if it is worth it or not. Should I just pay for her own insurance not from my job? Is it really worth it to have to pay an extra 10% in taxes?

Hi

My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years now. Last year, I couldn't find a babysitter for my daughter so he stayed home watching her and now our new baby. He's child support payment have been accumulating since.
Now, because I have been supporting the whole family I was thinking about claiming him on my taxes but I'm scare Child support will confiscate my refund to give it to his older son's mother due to backed up child support. I mean, we are not married, we've lived together for 3 years, they can't take my money, can they?
My question is, If I claimed him on my taxes, would Child support garnished MY refund due to his child support?

Seriuos Answers only please. I will prefered if somebody who deals with the IRS or filing taxes experience will answer please.

I've elected to implement the "Re-invest Capital Gains" option for my mutual fund. Are these gains deductible form my adjusted Gross income?

I assume that if I took the gains as cash I would have to pay income tax on them.

is this right?

Thanks,

Les

Do you have to be married to filed jointly? My boyfriend's dad said that you just have to be common law married in order to file together. My boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years and living together for about 2 and a half. I don't know if that makes us common law or what. We are planning to get married, but not for another year.

He also said that once you file jointly, you are considered married legally. Does he know what he's talking about?

I made around $29K this year and due to a flood and some deductions (I have all receipts) I was able to bring my taxable income to a few hundred.

I paid about $6K in federal taxes and $2.2K in NY taxes.

Hi
When i started working for my current employer in 2005, I was new to this country and thought i was the head of the household and i marked myself off for that and also 2 others. So the total is 3 deductions on my W4. After reading about this, i realised i cannot claim myself as head of household.
Should i fill out a new W4??
Is this considered fraud and could i get into trouble for this?

I will owe at least $2000.00 this tax season because of taking money out of my 401K and receiving a 1500.00 penalty tax. Money is tight and I will only be able to raise about 1000.00 before April 15th. What do I do?

I have 3 accounts with a foreign bank and they never give your interest figures, since it is not required in that country, should I just forget about it and only report U.S. Accounts that give you 1099s?

In 05 he was a minor, we claimed him as a dependent. He worked part time and made $6250 and paid $385 in in tax. This year we claimed his as our dependent. Will he get a refund? Does he file his own return?

In 06 he was 18, but still lived at home off mom and dad. This means we still claim him as a dependent then? In 06 he made about $9000 in wages and paid out about $550 in tax. Will he get a refund?

Now for 07 coming up, he is 19, same scenario. At age 19 do we still claim him as a dependent? Yes, he still lives off mom and dad?

Thanks

How does the capital gains tax for stock trading work? I heard that you can deduct $3000 of your stock losses against your income when calculating your annual income tax. What I am not clear is the following:

1. If I started trading in stocks beginning July 07 and had a net gain of $1700 for the year, would it be better for me to keep this as a gain and get it taxed or should I realize some losses to clear out this gain (I have some stocks on my portfolio which are down, but I have not realized it as it is not sold).?

2. If my net losses are only $1 for the year from stock trading, would I be able to deduct $3000 against my total income or would I be able to deduct only the loss of $1?

I got my job in June and on my papers I know I signed to pay more taxes than necessary. I was also told that students get about 90% back. At what point or how much will I get back (percent wise) my tax refund; if at all.
Thanks!
