You could do it January 2nd... most online sites wont be ready until late January, as Congress has not even passed all the tax laws for 2007 yet.... so this year things could be pushed back a bit.

It's almost impossible to have all the documentation you need at this point, unless you have nothing to file except some capital gains stuff.

You can file on January 1st, but you have to have all of your W2's and other papers ready. Most employers don't send them out til about the third week of January, but they are required by law to mail them by the 31st. At the very very latest you shouldn't have to file any later than the first week of February.

Online filing won't be available until mid-January. If you want to file before then, you'd have to mail in your return - you can do that on January 1 if you have all of your tax paperwork by then.

If you have all paper work, W2, 1099, etc. you can do on January 1. However, if you think you have all info, just because of last paystub, think again. Not all paystub have all necessary employer info. By law, w-2 and 1099 must be postmarked prior to January 31. if you do not have by then, you call irs and report employer.

As early as Jan1, UNLESS you receive a W2. You must have that in hand. Those have to be mailed to you no later than Jan. 31.
You also must have any 1099 statements if applicable.

Jan 1. However, if you require a W2, you'll need to wait until that arrives.
