Media was deluged yesterday with FAIR TAX, and it made me wonder...could this be a clever way to track ALL financial activity, AND require the National ID in order to eliminate cheating?

Is the IRS a beautiful thing after all, as it gives us 364 days of freedom and privacy?

We had "employees" last year for the first time. We never really defined if they were self employed or independent contractors. Anyway, if I report that I paid them money, then I was supposed to send a W2, right? Well I did not send a W2 so do I now just exclude that money from my expenses?

I filed my taxes about a month ago, and have recently received my refund check. I claimed myself, because my parents said they couldn't. I lived with them for six months last year, before I moved out on my own for the first time. I asked them before I filed my taxes and they told me to claim myself. So I did. But now they're doing their taxes and have found out that they CAN claim me, because it was a little over half a year that I lived with them. They want me to ammend my tax return so that they can get the tax break. But I'm going to have to pay back some of my refund if I do that. What should I do? I moved out becuase things weren't the best between us, and my dad's been mad at me for a long time. But now he wants my help to save them money....but I'm going to lose money in the process (I need it for school and my wedding). What would you do? Do you have any advice?

I have a joint bank account with a relative. We file income taxes separately. Can either of us take the full amount of interest earnings and report it as income or do we have to split the interest income 50/50 and report it as such?

I worked the first half of 2006 as an independent contractor, but switched jobs in September and have a W2. I know that i'm supposed to report the self-employed income on 1040, schedule C, but am also supposed to fill out 1040 for my W2 job.

How do I combine the two for all of 2006? Is there anything special I need to do? Any other forms?

Thanks!

Does the IRS need a copy of my 1099-MISC (that I used to claim nonemployee compensation)? I couldn't see anywhere that it asked me to enclose it with my tax return.
