If a person claims exempt on their W2's could this cause a problem with the IRS. What does exempt actually mean in relation to taxes?

Would it be ok if I just let them keep my income taxes for the next 2 or 3 years to pay if off rather than be put on a payment plan that i cannot really afford? i agreed to $200 a month. i only owe the money back because i had a girlfriend who had a little girl and she said i could claim her since i provided for her. we were living together for a year, but then we broke up. she moved in with me and i didnt put her on the lease or anything. Quite frankly, I dont want to get her or the child involved because we haven't spoken in awhile.

I failed to file in 2002, and now they are giving me all these charges. Does it help when I finally file? Do I have any leverage then? I don't want them to take this year's return- what's the best way to avoid that? What about an "offer in compromise"? Is that worth the application fee? Thanks in advance

I know you can take the deduction for day care but what about the cost of having the baby such as doctors, hospital stays, ect. Does that count for the same deduction?

I am about to graduate from college and awaiting an offer from a Big Four CPA firm to work in the Tax Department. I met with a big four tax partner recently and he told me that they only expected me to become a CPA. I asked him about the importance of getting a JD and told me it was not necessary. He said it would not by any means hurt my chances of being succesful or going up the ladder. He said studying it would be a personal preference to gain better understanding or to develop skills on tax laws.

What do you guys think?

Moved from a State that does not have State Income Tax to a State that does. We are getting ready to file our taxes, and were told that our income from the State that we lived in will be taxed here, my question is why? We did not live or work in this State, moved here in December 2006. No income here yet. Still looking for employment. Thank You

My ex-husband claims dependents for deduction purposes. The children live with me. I do not claim the children as dependents on my return, however, I want to claim them as qualifing EIC children. I am the custodial parent. I plan on filing as Head of Household.

I am a US citizen living in Canada, and recently married a Canadian. He has never lived or worked in the US, but has a good paying job in Canada. I am a US citizen on Social Security.

I understand there is a US/Canada treaty, does this mean that the US and Canadian revenue services to "talk to each other"?

If I file my taxes in Canada, do I still have to file my taxes in the US although I no longer live there? If so, should I file on my income alone or should I include my husband's although he has never lived or worked in the US, nor is he planning to? (The latter doesn't seem that fair to me).

I just filed my 2006 and 2005 Illinois Tax returns. I've done my federal tax returns every year, but this is my first time doing my state taxes. I want to file as far back as possible (I never realized I'd be getting money back!), but I can't find my old W2's or completed copies of my federal tax returns before 2005. Also, does anybody know how many years I can go back on an Illinois Tax return? I also heard that I could get interest on refunds from state tax returns that I didn't previously file. Is this true, and if so how much interest would I get? Thanks, for any help anyone gives. Matthew 7:12

I have rental property (Houses) and I purchased a truck to use 100% in the business this year.
I wanted to take the 179 deduction for part of the truck but I have a loss on my rentals
because of alot of improvements I made to them.
I also work as a nurse which generates additional income.
When I subtract the rental losses from my wages as a nurse I have taxable income.
Can I take the 179 deduction based on that or because my rental property has a loss
Im not allowed to claim a 179 decuction.
Im a little confused about this and I would appreciate any help on this matter.
Thanks
