Go to irs.gov and click on the efile icon on the left hand side. Follow the links and it will take you to a selection of providers who will do your federal return for free. You may have to pay for state, but I have never paid more than $20 for that (and that's for the deluxe package).

If you are on a low income or a senior, check out VITA or TCE at www.irs.gov - use the search box in the top right-hand corner.

Doing your own taxes is only a good idea if you know what you are doing. If you do not know what you are doing you should consult a tax pro. I work for a CPA and most of our new clients are ex-Turbotax (or similar) users.

I have been doing my taxes online for years and I would never go back to filing a paper return. It's cheaper to file online (you don't even pay postage!) and it even saves you the time you would spend going to the post office.

I highly recommend http://freetax.mortgageous.com/ - they don't charge for preparing, printing, or e-filing a standard return and they have free support too. I also like that they guarantee an accurate return or they'll pay the penalty. You really can't go wrong.

If your income is under around $40K a year, look for a VITA site near you and they'll prepare your return at no charge. Most sites can efile. See irs.gov for more info on this program - type "VITA" into the search box.

I don't know of anywhere that you can get it done for free, but online is, in my opinion, the easiest and cheapest way - try http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-1995821-10465049
