if i am single, and i have no dependents...is it 25 percent of my check?

It all depends on where you live, city and state taxes will come into play, but the general "rule of thumb" calculation is 33%, or 1/3rd is taken out in taxes. If you make $1000 per check then expect to actually take home $666.

It would depend among other things on how often you get paid - getting $1000 a week would be very different than getting that much per month.
