The deadline this year is April 17th. Emancipation Day in DC is on the 16th and as the federal government recognizes DC holidays, we get the extra day.

You can file your return from anywhere in the world. Thousands of ex-pat Americans file without setting foot in the country all year. However, if you need to use a paid preparer to do your taxes and you are away from your home state, make sure they can handle the state issues.

This year the 17th of April is the last day to file taxes. If you know you have a refund coming, it doesn't matter if you make the deadline or not. If you think you will owe money, after April 17th you will be penalized and have interest charged to you for everyday you are late. You can mail your taxes from any state, but you file your state tax return for the state you lived in while you worked in 2006. If you lived in 2 or 3 different states, you need to file part year returns in each state.
