You can do everything yourself with no outside help whatsoever. You can get forms at the post office, public library, online at IRS.GOV or by calling toll free at --1-800-829-3676. You need the form 1040ES and instructions thereto. This will be for anticipated taxes that you want to prepay for the year 2007. For year 2006 you will need form 1040, Sch C and Sch SE to compute your taxes for 2006; and the 1040 instruction book which has the tax tables, EIC tables and so on. You can also check in your community and see if there is a VITA Site provided by the IRS which will give you free tax preparation assistance. If you go online to IRS.GOV you can also wend your way through the free online filing setup and do your 06 taxes online yourself. If you have specific questions just ask as I have worked with the VITA program since its inception.

Noone needs to go to a tax prep company. The question is, are you able to deal with your own income and expense to make the most of your money? If you aren't, like most people, it would pay to find someone to help you. Places like Jackson-Hewitt or H & R Block are good at putting the numbers in the right places, but aren't so good at interpreting the Internal Revenue Code or Treasury Regulations or providing planning for retirement or future taxes. CPA's are good, but they're expensive and sometimes screw up the simple things on tax returns. There are a ton of folks that shouldn't be anywhere near a tax return, but still charge customers. Then there are a ton of people that fall somewhere in between those options.

I'd go to an AARP Tax Aid site or VITA site for free tax assistance. They will have people that are qualified to answer your tax questions and assist you in filing a tax return for Federal and State if needed for no charge, that's right,, free electronic filing. There are minimum amounts you would have to earn to even need to file a tax return. but if you make more than $400.00 of self-employment income you will need to file to pay your social security tax. (called self-employment tax) You can search the internet for AARP TaxAid or VITA or get the information on the IRS web site as to where a local site is.

The best thing to do is purchase a software program, I like TaxCut myself, and is only $30. It has full instructions. It will guide you through the process by asking you a set of questions. From your answers it will determine if you need to pay or even get a refund. It will tell you what to do if you don't have W2's or any other paper work.

No you dont have to go to a tax preparer.Just have the tax forms filled out, make sure the IRS agrees with the amount you come up with and mail in your payment. There are also payment schedules that the IRS will work with you on.They will work with you think about it they want their money.

you can always file on your own. Post Officies carry the proper forms.

you will have to pay a small filing fee, however.

And if there is an error, you wont have the support of a H&R Block, TurboTax(if you do it on line), etc.

You need to get a form from the company if you made over $600 from them - if you didn't then do not worry about it.
