Never had this situation come up before...I have an 80 year old man who designated his son as his power of attorney. Can the son just sign the federal return or do they need to sign form 2848? 2848 appears to be more for lawyers. It will be difficult to get the elderly man to sign again, he is in very poor health.
Thanks for your help!

We filed our state taxes by mail (GA) and it has been 6 weeks and they still have no record of it. We did our federal taxes by efile using Turbo Tax (w/ no problems) and declined filing state that way in order to save money. Now I am thinking since they havent recieved the return I mailed in, what if I go back and efile it using turbo tax. What will happen if my mailed return shows up later? Will I be "in trouble"?

Hi I have a small business and have carryover of expenses that were not allowed in 2005 as I posted a loss that year. I have money in line 41 of the 2005 form 8829. I want to apply those carryovers to this years taxes and am unsure where to do it on the forms. My tax software says I need to attach a statement when I enter the carryovers. What do I enter as my statement and where (on which form) is the carryover amount entered? DO I need to file a form 1045 as well?

I was told they would send me a 1099 misc. I have not received it yet. How long do they have to send a 1099 misc? Is there any cut off date? What if I never get the 1099 misc? What is my responsibility in this?

I wanted to see if another well-known company would come up with the same amount as I did by preparing them myself. I was a little bothered from the moment I called them, because they wouldn't even tell me how much I could be charged. They were rude, but also said that I did not have to pay if I disagreed. So, I went to see for myself. After he showed me what I would be getting back, I was so shocked to hear how much they charged and told him there was no way I could afford that. He said the fee was something we could have discussed before he started, but I said, "No--that's not what they told me on the phone; they wouldn't even give me an amount". My husband told me to just leave and have them put it on hold because we can finish them ourselves for a lot less. When I got home, I realized that they still have my W-2 forms and I need to get them back. I fear that they will be nasty with me when I tell them that I wish to take my business elsewhere. What do you think?

I am using HR Block electronic filing and am wondering if I have to enter both W2's in the Income section on my federal return. I worked 5 weeks in NJ and the rest in NY, but for the same company, which accounts for the 2 W2's. Wages and Taxes are the same on both (boxes 1-6) and the only difference is boxes 15-19. On my NY W2 box 16 shows the same balance as box 1, but on the NJ W2 it shows the amount I earned there. My final pay statement shows the amount on the NY W2, which means that balance includes my NJ earnings. I don't know why they aren't separated?

I entered the info from both W2's in the Income section, but it doubled my actual income, so that's my problem. I assume I don't have to enter both. Should I only enter my NY W2 information, since that's where my home office is, my residence is, and where i work the majority of my time, and use the NJ W2 when calculating my State returns? Either that, or are my W2's incorrectly showing the same total earnings in box 1 on both?

No, the answer isn't subtact the net from the gross off your paycheck and take that amount and divide it from your taxable wages.

I would like to know whats the actuall number the IRS uses to take tax money and make deductions from your paycheck. For example I had one pay check that had FED INC TAX percentage deduction of taxable wages was 9.14% and another check that was only $76.00 more and that FED INC TAX percentage deduction came out to 9.50%. So obviously if you make more, the amount they take out will increase, thus theres a common number they use to make deductions based on your taxable wages.....and thats the number I would like to know. Thank you.

I hate the IRS and will do anything excluding going to jail to avoid paying these income taxes. Should I create Phony deductions, charity scams. When she hired me she took advantage of the fact that I knew nothing about "self employment", so when she told me that I would be working for her real estate office as an administrative assistant/secretary and working 40 hours a week, for $8 dollars an hour, but I would need to do my own taxes, I was apprehensive but needed a job quick. I have come to find out that she is taking advantage of me. I am having to take out a substantial portion of income to keep up with the self employment taxes. She told me that I am an independent contractor and do whatever she says, and once in a blue moon she will have run an errand locally, but 99% of the time, I sit behind a desk and take orders from her all day. I am even admonished if I am 2 minutes late. She said that all her agents, including herself, are independent contractors and self employed, but they get commission and such. I work the same hours-mon-fri. How do I go about reporting her? Am I right do do this? I want to find another job...
