If I'm buying a used car from a private party in CA (L.A. county), but have an Illinois driver's license, do I need to pay the use tax, and if I do, to who?
The information I found was kinda ambigious.
I just moved here a week ago for a limited time.

I live in massachusetts but worked in vermont for most of last year. I paid taxes in both states but thats to be expected and not what im confused about. I thought that I would get almost all of my vermont taxes back but im only getting a very small refund. On top of that I'm getting a small massachusetts refund. My understanding was that i would get almost all of my vermont taxes back or it would be "credited" towards massachusetts taxes.

Hi,

Sorry to bother you - I'm new to this. I saw that you've answered a lot of questions about 1099s and 1040s on here and thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

I've recently been hired as a freelancer (march 9th). My boss said I'd have to file a 1099. Then I read some things on here and you mentioned a 1040 quarterly tax form. Now, I haven't worked in a while and I am my husband's dependent. Do I file with him or separately?I think I'll make 25k a year with this new job, but a 1099 means 15% gets taken out of it? Geez. Is that at the end of the year or should I file a quarterly 1040? I'm so confused, but I want to make sure I do this right. Thanks so much for your time and help.

You seem so knowledgeable!

Thanks again in advance.

I heard that you can put some of the money you owe into an IRA. For example if you owe $9,000 in taxes, $4000 of it can be contributed to an IRA. Is this true? If so what is the qualifications?

Told my bud that I got zinged on stock sales as I didn't pay long term cap gains tax (company was taken over and we were cashed out - didn't know at the time) so I'm not having to tak the hit on Fed AND state (CA) returns. He says I should ONLY be paying the Fed, not CA. I say I need to pay BOTH. Who's right?

Last year I made about $14,000 working part time while in school. My father makes alot of money and because of this he doesn't receive any tax credit to pay for my education. So what he does is gives me the money from his bank account and I pay for my schooling. My tuition alone last year was over $11,000. Also i spent $648 dollars in student loan interest. I also purchased a car this year as well. So I was told I can deduct the sales tax on my car.

Basically what im asking is that can I deduct the car sales tax, tuition expenses, student loan interest from my earnings even though it probably exceeds what I made last year. Before this year I worked and saved alot of money to go to nursing school since I knew it was going to be expensive. Any help is much appreciated.

I have searched online and found that self-employed people pay their taxes quarterly, but I am not certain whether or not I am considered self-employed. I work for a marketing company giving out samples at Wal-mart. I think from what I read, that that is not considered self-employed. The article I read online says something about being involved with an agency. If anyone has any knowledge about how to estimate and pay taxes in this situation, I would be very appreciative.
Thanks

I purchased a computer in January 2006 for use at the office at the location of the non-profit. That was when I was paid a salary. When the salary ended, I chose to make my hours my own, rather than "punch a time clock", moved the computer to my home, and set up a home office for the work and to the benefit of the non-profit. That space and computer are used for the functions of the non-profit org specifically. I have another computer for my personal use and keep the work distinct from each machine. Can I deduct the cost of the equipment I purchased for the non-profit home office on my taxes?
