I graduated in 2006. I'm looking for any info concerning tax breaks others could get for helping me out with my loans. (Making payments directly to the loan-managing institution, of course)

I bought a home last year and I got my HUD1 statement where I can see my mortgage interest charges, my "per diem" interest charges and my closing costs. How can I deduct those closing costs and other fees (i.e. prep fees? Realtor fees?) in my 2006 taxes?

I work as an independent consultant providing advisory services. My pay is gross with no deductions for advisory services to my clients in my consulting business.

Specific questions are:
1) Where do I remit the employer/employee portion of Social Security and Medicare?
2) What forms do I use? 1040ES seems to lack worksheets for deducting expenses for self-employed persons.

I sent in all of my w-2s in with my federal return(oops!), but I have photocopies. Should I have my w-2s reissued, or are copies accepted. I live in Missouri, and they have not responded to my inquiries.

Thanks
Steve

I'm currently employed by the state of Massachusetts but have just been offered a job in the private sector.

I have been contributing to the state pension fund for eight years but will not be vested (that requires 10 years in the system) so my contributions will be returned to me.

I'm told that you can either roll that money into a 401k or take a cash payout but that if you take the cash you pay a substantial penalty in addition to applicable taxes.

Does anyone know how much of a penalty you have to pay? Or for that matter, at what rate it gets taxed? I would ask HR but don't want to tip them off to the fact that I might be leaving.

I bought a hybrid in 2006 thinking I would get the tax credit. However, after doing my taxes, I am getting most of my money back due to only working part of the year and real estate tax deductions. Next year I think my income will be higher. Can I wait and take the credit next year? How will someone know I purchased in 06 and not 07? I bought the car factoring in the credit, dont want it wasted.

(1) On Apr. 1st, Bought XYZ for $10000
(2) On Apr. 2nd Sold it for $8000
(3) On Apr. 20th Bought XYZ for $5000
(4) On Apr. 21st Sold it for $4000

The first trade is a Wash Sale (step 1 and 2) because within 30 days, there is a Buy on Apr. 20th. The second trade is also a Wash sale (step 3 and 4) because in its previous 30 days, there was a Buy on Apr. 1st. There is no other transactions related to XYZ in this year. When to claim the loss?

Thanks in advance!

My moving expenses were "grossed-up" and shown as part of my wages so that the after tax amount equaled the costs paid out on my behalf to the moving company, closing costs, and realtor fee. Is there a portion of these reimbursements that can be shown as something other than wages to reduce my net income? These reimbursements have made me ineligible for the child tax credit ($2,000) and has made my 2006 Roth IRA contribution ineligible for investment in a Roth IRA.

I got a 1099, out of the blue, and extremely late from a past employer and have no money to pay taxes on it for the current season- I know I can file for an extension, but have heard that would mean I still have to pay 90% of the amount. My past employer sent this extremely late, what can I do to delay payment?

Hi, I paid $137,000 for my home in 2003 and it is now worth less than $120,000. I'm basically up a creek without a paddle because this was supposed to be a "starter home" and now i'll never be able to sell it, can you claim depreciation on your taxes?

I realize that any improvements to rental properties are not deductible, just repairs. However, even though the new siding is an improvement to the property it is also repairing the old siding to prevent any further water damage to interior of the home.

By the IRS chart, it should be here tomorrow. This morning there was a deposit for $701.10 in my checking account which reads "tax/financial services"....if the IRS had a problem with my refund, would they send a portion of the refund? I haven't heard anything from them.
