I have joint custody of my child and I never claimed him before because his father has always "needed" to claim him even though we are supposed to claim him every other year. I have yet to claim him. So i was wondering if i need his birth certificate to claim him. His father took that when we split.

I heard that you can file a tax deduction for paying rent at your residence and get something like a full month's rent back. Is this true?

We got married in Dec. 10. My refund is garnished totally for child support reasons. She has a 17 year old daughter. Our plans at this time are to file separately so her tax refund won't be touched for my reasons. Can she still file single head of household since she was single for 11 months of the year

Recently someone was telling me that you can still file and claim your child on your taxes even if you haven't earned any income. I never heard anything like that before and I was just wondering if anybody else had.

back in to get the year end total of the IRA before applying the proper factor to determine the RMD? e.g.: Beginning of year:$200,000, monthly w/ds of $500. $10,000 growth during year. Yr end total $210,000. Is the factor applied against: $200,000, $210,000, or $216,000? Is the proper factor the one for that age on Dec. 31 of that same year?

For year 2003, IRS sent a notice saying that I owe a ridiculous sum of money.

This is primarily due to schedule-D. I had filed one for 2003 but totalled all the transactions rather than writing every item line by line. Unfortunately I had moved in mid-2005. So IRS mailed out some kind of errata which I needed to have responded by August 2005. Since I moved, I never received this notice. IRS then sent a collections notice in 2006. For which I responded with a new schedule-D with all the details. But IRS keeps ignoring every time I send a correspondence. I have hired a CPA. But today I received another notice, then I called IRS, they simply said, "Sir, your time to file for a correction to schedule-D expired in August 2005. So you owe us more than $100K. We will collect from you".

I obviously am going to call my CPA and ask him to follow up. But I wanted some help from someone who has gone through this. This is just to make sure that my CPA is doing the right thing.

Thanks

I am a college student and this will be my first year filing taxes. I work part-time and I earned about $4900. Is there anything I need to be aware of that can help benefit me or perhaps even something I need to be cautious about?

Thanks!

I have recently acquired residence and am wondering if I should file taxes with my spouse? Would it help us save? Or are there any other advantages of filling taxes together?

I have always filed my own taxes and have never had any problems, but I'm am completely confused as to why, when I complete the e-file process, it says I owe! I have really simple taxes, with two W-2's to report, no kids and no other deductions/income. When I add each of them seperately, each one has a summary that says I should receive around $440 back. But when I add them both on, I magically owe $162! I don't understand...If the summary shows each one gives me a credit around $440, shouldn't I be getting a refund around $880...and not have to owe?! Someone give me a clue please. I'm completely confused and this has never happened to me in previous years.

Hi. I am getting a bit anxious as tax season arrives and we are trying to estimate our return before we go into the accountant. I file joint with my wife and we net ~200K. The deductions i have will be identical to the ones I had last year. Last year we got back $6800 from federal and $1500 from state (CA). This year is our turn to claim my step-son as a dependant and we also added another dependant with our first child in Feb of 2006. Based on my last year return, what should I count on bringing in with the two added dependants? Will my return be much larger? Thanks for your help.

There are no dependents and he only works part time. We've lived together for 3 years and I've always filed single. I was told I could amend my returns for the last 3 years. I don't want to do anything illegal.

So I just saw on my w2 that my work goofed and had me down for 2 allowances the entire 2006. I live at home with my parents so I should have no allowances right? Which means not enough money was taken out of my checks in taxes. What can I do to make this right?

A friend of mine wanted to borrow a large sum of money for emergency. Although it was sort of strange to ask, I told him yes, but he had to sign a promissory note (drawn up by WillMaker or some other software). Now many months passed but I never seen a dime of it. Can I write this loan as bad debt on my tax return?
