I have joint custody of my child and I never claimed him before because his father has always "needed" to claim him even though we are supposed to claim him every other year. I have yet to claim him. So i was wondering if i need his birth certificate to claim him. His father took that when we split.

No, you just need his SS number.

Also, you can request a copy of his birth certificate online from the county court.

Nope, just his Social Security number..

And FYI: you can always get a copy of the birth certificate by going to the courthouse in the county your child was born. I think it's around $10 to get a certified copy.

No, you don't need his birth certificate. You will need his social security number though.

It would be a good idea to apply for a copy of his birth certificate though - you might need it sometime, and probably will when he starts school.

No, but you will need your child's social security number, and you'll need to file before your husband does - unless he's agreed to not claim him this year.
