My brother who is a US citizen has been living outside of the US through all of 2006. He came back to visit for a few weeks but thats all. I remember someone once told me that if you're living outside the US for more than X days out of the year then you don't need to file income tax. Is this true and does anyone know how many days?

Thanks.

I gave my employee a W2 and he has a 1099 from a previous employment. $9700 from W2 and $14,000 from 1099. We calculated his refund on H&R Block's website and it seems to high, (over $5000.00) He has 3 dependants, 2 childs under 4 and his wife. Is this accurate? He is paying pre-school for one of his kids, bought a used car last year and a laptop. can this be the reason? Thanks everybody.

I'm here on H1 visa. I came here alone initially (in may 2005) and filled W4 as single. Later my family (wife and daughter) joined me in August 2005. I didnt file the renewed W4 and my status remained Single on W2. Is there any way I can get tax benefit of being married? What could be done in such a case?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

I am assuming the company I am working for will submit my W-9 and inform the IRS of my wages. Is that so? If they do not submit my wages to the IRS would the IRS expect me to file and pay income tax every year even if I earned no wages or was unemployed? I am receiving direct deposit of my wages from the company I am working for currently. Would there be any proof of these wages provided to the IRS from the company I am contracting with? I have just started this contractor job in 2007 and was an employee with a W-2 until Nov of 2006. I am hearing conflicting information of persons who do not file, and those who do. This is not a moral issue I am interested on the legal and financial outcomes if I chose to not pay quarterly estimated taxes for 2007.

Ok folks here my dilema, last year I claimed head of household because my parents no longer work(receive SSI) but this year my older sister wants to claim H of H and claim me, my brother and sister this year(done at H&R). Last year I made more, but this year she made more than me andmy sister and wants to claim all three of us. Can she do this this year or no? Has anybody done something similiar?

P.S. I didn't get audited by the IRS if anybody is wondering, the guy their at H&R said that this is Ok'd by the IRS.
