This is because I feel I can get more federal return from online service provider A than a similar service provider B. But the catch is that A will charge me more than B to file for the state.
By the way, my gross salary for 2006 is $39K. Can someone suggest me the best site to get the maximum returns for free (federal as well as state)?

My husband and I received a letter from IRS stating that we are now responsible for $13,000 taxes on an income of $64,000. We were part of a mortgage scam 6 years ago and the home was foreclosed on. The mortgage company sent the IRS a form stating that they 'forgave' our loan and now the IRS is treating it as an income. We have contacted IRS and were told to talk to someone at the mortgage company and get a corrected form that shows it was foreclosed on -not forgiven. We tried that and they told us all our records were purged from their records. They were very rude and asked us" well what do expect us to do?" What do we do now? We can't afford to pay this, and were hoping to get taxes back this year. If anyone can help us please do. Oh and if you have nothing intelligent to say please don't answer. I don't need sarcasm.

I've got my W-2's but I haven't gotten a tax booklet in the mail. I've been to the Post Office and there are no signs of tax stuff. I guess I could go to the IRS office but what about the one I need for the state? Where do I get that one? Is it just too early or what? Do you only get the booklets if you are employed?

We both work and we have no dependents. We have used Turbo Tax for two years and we seem to get much better results filing separately. Shouldn't it be pretty much the same either way?

Trying to do my own taxes with Turbo Tax but it only allows $674.22 cash back. How do I maximize my return?

Wages: $7052.59
Federal Income Tax Withheld: $674.22
Social Security Tax Withheld: $437.36
Medicare Tax Withheld: $102.26
Category 14 Other: CASDI $56.42

Also, State Income Tax: $109.87

I think it adds up to a 20% tax. I'm a full time student at a University and I have a college loan but I never paid any of the interest. I dont really have much in my life right now that I can deduct anything.

Am I just stuck with the $674.22 tax return? I was hoping to get mots or all of my withheld money back.

Thanks!

See line 5 of Schedule A. All the IRS publications are very unclear. They say it expired but that there was legislation to keep it going. I cannot confirm it has been or hasn't. Please help!
