I've been divorced for many years. My son who turned 18 during 2006 lived with me the entire year. I'm confused by this years requirements that state you can file head of household with a qualifying dependent OTHER than your dependent child. What does this mean? Can I file Head of household?

You are Head of Household if your son lived with you for more than 6 months of the year and paid more than half his support. If he is 18 and still going to school or college full time.
The part about "qualifying child for Head of Household other than your dependent" Is if you can't claim the exemption for the child but they qualify you as head of household. Read the instructions for who qualifies you for the filing status. Research WWW.IRS.GOV or call 1-800-829-3676 and request Publication 17, Your Guide to Indiviual Income Tax".

There are cases where a taxpayer can file as Head of Household when a different relative, such as a sibling, lives with him. There is also the situation where a taxpayer supports a parent who does not live with the taxpayer, and that taxpayer may claim Head of Household.

As long as your child did not support himself, he qualifies as your dependent child and you can file as Head of Household.
