It has no meaning, it was the number that was next when your ssn was assigned to you. The first sequence used to have a connection to what region of the US a ssn was issued from, but this no longer applies.

The numbers in drivers licenses do have a meaning in states using the Soundex system.

It's just a group number, doesn't really mean anything. Generally, the higher the first 3 numbers are, the farther west you live. if you are 865 first three, you probably live out west. If you are 074, you probably live in the Northeast.
