This past year I decided I wanted to start a business (photography). I've only purchased a few things and haven't made any money yet. Can I claim what I purchased as a deduction? Do you have to have a Tax Id number before you can do this? Do I have to file a seperate form (from my standard tax form)? - Thanks for the help!!!

I just received my 1099 from my online broker. I'm not sure what to report on gains so please help me. For simplicity, I bought stocks at $2500, and sold them for proceed of $2800. My profit would be $300 so I'm thinking I should only report $300 as income/gain but my 1099-B only seem to have $2800 as gain. I'm new to reporting stock taxes so please let me know if I should only report $300, thank you.

18 years old. I am dependent on my parents. I work part time at an assisted living center.

So I have come to ask the gurus of Yahoo:

I use to have two part time jobs. I quit one of them back in August (because I was starting school, and I wouldn't be able to work on weekdays).

So here are my questions:

1). Will I have to pay taxes for the job that I quit almost 5-6 months ago? (I haven't gotten my W-2 for it, btw it's KUMON).

2). When people refer to the $5121 limit (correct me if I am wrong) where if I make over that much, I must file for taxes. This may sound stupid but uh...does that mean that if I made $5121 in one year, I must file for taxes, or in total over a period of time (i.e over say a few years)?

Thanks for helping a tax newbie out!

I have problems defining my tax filing status. My wife and I got married in June of 2006. I worked all year in NYC and my wife till August in Boston. Even though I worked in NYC, my official residence was in Boston, MA till MArch. My wife lived till September in Boston before she moved to NYC. Do I file "married filing jointly"? We had different residences and it seem that the State filing requires us to file the State as "married filing seperat"? Can I in this case file as head of the household for MA since i financially supported the residence ?

Hello. I have a question about taxation of pay. My husband is an actor, when he signs a contract to do a project, it states rate of pay for the day and that residuals are to be paid to him (whatever the stipulations may be). Why are his residuals taxed soooo high? It's about 47%! It's taxed like a bonus, but it's actually part of his pay, so why does the government do that? Are they just trying to take more taxes from the more highly paid actors and raping the little guy in the process? Cause that's how it feels.

My wife and I won a Dell Laptop from ePrize last summer. We were told that although the prize was free we would have to pay a tax on it.

Well...it has come time to pay our taxes and we have not received our required 1099 tax form from ePrize. I have called and left four messages with them and they have not gotten back to us.

My question is: when is a 1099 tax form required to be mailed and received? And: should I contact the IRS? Are they in violation of any laws since I have not recieved the 1099 tax form yet?

I made 7 trades in 06 and am filling out a D-1. Just to make sure I am getting this right: Column d is the Sale price? (the total amount received upon executing the sale) Column e is the Price I paid for when buying, right? If e is $100 and d is $80...then my LOSS will be reported on column F, right?

*note my short term gain is $2,000*

Now, what doesn't make sense is the form D-1 is asking me to add all the amounts from Column d, which comes to $14,000 and then to combine the amounts in column f, which is my gain of $2000...making Part 1 of Sched. D, line3 $16,000...Why do they want the Sales price totals???

My main goal is to offset the short term gain of $2000 with my single-transaction, Long term Loss of $5000...making the loss of $3000 for the year.

It is just scary to see such a high amount for column D without showing for column e.

Is this right?
