The Federal return is unaffected. You could work in one, or 40 states; they don't care. Just show all your income, and federal tax withheld.

You may have to file two state returns if both states you worked in require filing.

You could live a 20 states and it wouldn't have any affect on your Federal return.

As to state returns, you'll file a part year return for each state, claming the income that you earned while a resident there.

The truth is the state where you are a resident will give you a credit for taxes paid to other states. You will still file both states returns. One resident return and one non-resident. But the total tax will be based upon the combined rates.

Your federal return doesn't change. The IRS doesn't care where you make your money, as long as they get their cut! You need to file a PY (part-year) return in both states though.
