he filed 3 returns? I assume youmeant the 3 w2's.

Personally, I'm surprised you got a refund, because the IRS
immediately matches reported income to stated income and should have fixed the return.

Since they havent, its a matterof time before he receives
an automated system message, because the return didnt
match income.

To avoid this, he must file an amended tax return, and possibly will owe taxes and penalties.

File this amended return asap.

He will need to file an ADJUSTED return, adding the income and withholdings to it...both Federal and State, if your state has income taxes. Do the Federal return first...then the State, then submit. You have up to THREE years to file an amended return. If he got a refund on the first one he did, chances are very good that he'll get an additional refund.

what he needs to do is file an amended return reporting this income as well. the difference in tax will be calculated and he may either end up owing money or getting more of a refund. it should be filed by 4/17.

He needs to file a 1040X, and amended return, to account for the difference. Tell him to hold on to that refund - as he may have to send some of it back to the IRS.

If he doesn't file the amended return, the IRS will eventually send him a letter, and ask for what he owes - plus interests if it's after April 15th (and they're on the slow side, so it will be after that date.)

If he does it himself, he will avoid the interest & penalties.

You can always amend a tax return. If you use a software like turbo tax, it is even easy.
