head of household is for 1 person with a dependent
irs.gov has worksheet for seperated people

If you are married, your choices for filing status are married filing joint, or married filing separately. NOT single or head of household.

They wouldn't bother to have all of those filing statuses if people could just choose whatever one they wanted to. There are requirements for each, and you have to meet the requirements to be able to file that way.
