If you haven't heard from the IRS, and it's been since 1996, my guess is it's because you were due a refund all those years.

They don't hound people to file for their refunds...they hound them if they OWE...

The filing deadline for your 2001 taxes was April 2002. It's been over three years - so there's no way to get any of those refunds.

Now...if you actually owed taxes those years...that's a different story. If you didn't keep records, I have no idea how you'd fix it. But since you never got a letter from the IRS...I suspect either nothing was filed by your employer to them....or again, you were due a refund.

Run away. They will find you eventually. The IRS when they finally catch up will penalize you for every year past with interest that will take you a long time to payoff. Talk to an accountant, a real one not a H&R Block one either.

My friend did not pay taxes for 12 years and they found him years later and told him he owes big bucks and all the time he did not pay they added on interest. So he never got ahead of all the back pay because of the interest they tacked on every year he didn't pay. Oh they took his taxes for many year,it was just the interest that was building up. So it's hard to get ahead of it all.

if you owe them, you better file before they come to you. if they owe you, you won't be able to get any refund since you only have three years to file for your refund.
