My buddy has $7,000 in a tax return coming to him. He says he owes over $40,000 in credit cards and will be filing a Chapter 7 because he has been unable to find work for some time. Is there a way he can invest/protect this $7,000 so it isn't taken? He said he wants to put it in something like edvest(?) or another thing for his kids college, can he do that or is there something else he can do to protect the return?

For the responders, Yes, I have told him NOT to file but to try to work it out with creditors instead.

know you can call a creditor and ask them to re-age your account so any lates/ past dues won't show. But does anyone know which companies(creditors) will Re-Age, and which won't????? Does Capital One??

My family of 3 is planning a Florida vacation for 2009. Our goal is to pay cash and not put everything on credit at the last minute. To do this we're looking at areas of our life where we can cut back and put money aside.

For example each time we decide to eat at home instead of eating out we'll stuff $10 bucks into an envelope. When we make coffee at home and take it to work instead of getting coffee out we'll stuff away $2 to $5.

What I'm needing is some fresh insight into areas where a family with a 10 yr. old boy can cut back. (Sorry. Losing the cable is not an option though I wish it were.) And anything that helps a young boy learn some money sense in the process would be great too.

How do you add an authorized user to your debit card? Or do you have to add the person to your checking account? I don't want the person to write checks/be on my account, but I do want the person to have a debit card. Is this possible?

I just got off the phone with a friendgirl and she is having the toughest time financially. My husband and I helped buy her children Christmas gifts because her and her husband couldn't afford to. (Really, we couldn't either, but we did). She told me this morning that their rent is due (not past due). She don't even have the full amout for the rent and the only thing they have in the refrigerator is butter, bread and a jar of mayo. I'm going to give her $100; not a lot but it will help. Before she hung up she asked me, what do you do when you have to make a decision to either pay your rent or feed your children. That question kind of stuck with me and I just want to know what you think.

Long story short - I went back to college at 27, got behind on bills, had to take out a bunch of student loans and by the time I graduated, I'm in debt over my head (about $10K) plus have $40K in student loans, am behind on everything and right before I went into college I bought a house - a fixer-upper - that I can no longer afford to fix up. I'm behind on those payments as well and I fear I'll never be able to sell the house (it's not a showpiece, that's for sure), especially with the market in the state it's in.

I know student loans can't be discharged with chapter 7 - but I still have to pay on them so that's why I mentioned them.

What has your experience been? Part of me wants to file chapter 7 and start over again a wiser woman. I'm just afraid and my fear is making me unable to decide and here I sit. Help!

ok here's the thing i am wondering what the best way to go about getting a loan paid back. me and my husband lent them 700 dollars back in march so far we've gotten 100 dollars we told them to pay every other month 100 dollars and gave them a yr to pay it. they have 2 other people to pay also and every time we ask there's an excuse such as oh had to pay bills or something comes up. it's irritating b/c they still go out and do things or buy unneccessary things but can't pay anyone back. i didn't want to but my husband really did so i decided to cave knowing there was a good chance we'd fight with hiim for it his own parents said they didn't have money which is false. my husband won't ask cause he doesn't want to fight over 600 dollars but to me it's alot and we may not need it to pay bills but moving soon that would help us out. what should i do?

right now i'm paying for a new car. The original amount financed is around 14k april of 2007 and i have it down to 11 as of dec 07. I am paying double my required amount and i'm thinking because of the 7% simple interest i have, i feel like i'm not getting very far on this. Right now i'm thinking of having BofA or maybe a credit union take over my balance and get a lower interest rate? what do you guys think is the best move?
