I file single and only made $18,409 this year. I paid $1217 in withholding. So why is my tax return only $157? This woman I work with has like 7 kids and gets a lovely check over $9000 from the IRS, ridiculous! Is she getting my money or what?

I have owned my home for a little over 1 year (in Alabama). I paid $215,000 for it (paid in cash, no financing needed).
I want to move soon to a bigger house so the house will cost more than my current one.
I was wondering what exactly the 2 year tax law is? Does it apply ALL the time or are there ways to get out of it or not have to pay it?

Thanks in advance.

I graduated from a run of mill university, and am working in IT field in a local government. Got a little over 5 year of experience. I am still relatively young nearing my mid 30s.

I am interested in getting a job at prestigious schools like Harvard, Princeton or Darthmouth as an IT technician. How competitive is it? How difficult is the process, and do interviewers sometimes give a bit of BS during hiring processes like in private or government sector?

Once you get in, that is if you get in, how fast paced do those Ivy schools tend to be for your work?

What do you recommend to do in a job, in order to not get laid off and increase the chances of staying a few years (US)?

I've been living and working abroad for a number of years but am planning to return to work in the US. I'm trying to figure out if I will be able to live on a teacher's salary. They are so low that every dollar counts. I've determined that if social security (teacher retirement) is withheld before income tax is figured, there is a difference of around $100 a month in take-home. But I can't remember how it works.

Is the federal income tax withheld first, then social security? Or are they both determined based on the gross salary? What about state income tax? Is it based on gross or net after federal and social security?

Thanks.

My husband passed the postal exam and was told that his three requests of locations had been noted. He doesn't know how to follow up - he thinks perhaps they will just call when there is an opening in one of his preferred locations but is there another application process or some way to find out what is going on?
