In most states, there is no legal requirement - federal law doesn't require breaks or lunch breaks. Some states have requirements for breaks - Missouri doesn't. See the state website at http://www.dolir.mo.gov/ls/faq/faq_general.htm

Isn't this just awful... I worked in a place that took care of children and I did not get a break until my shift was over. which was approximately 6 hours I quit right away when I realized my rights were not being held.

You're absolutely right...if they work 6 hours you are required by law to take at least a 30 minute lunch break and at least one 15 minute break.

If this is in the United States, it depends on the state you work in. The Federal government does not require a lunch break. Check the Department of Labor for your local law.

I think you're right, however I work 8 1/2 hours everyday without a single break. I eat and work at the same time.
