I'm glad you did the right thing without threat of legal penalty.
But to answer your question, there are legalities behind. If you know the money isn't yours you are legally responsible to return it. There have been cases where people went to jail for spending money that was accidentally credited to their account. To avoid legal penalties you would have to prove you thought the money was yours.

You have no recourse. When you signed up for direct deposit, you signed a contract with "fine print" that allowed them to deposit to your account and to withdraw any money in excess or in error. They were doing you a favor by notifying you.

I would sit on it. Worse than losing 10 million is owing 10 million and that's attached with a felony charge and jail time. If after a few months to a year no change, then I would start making deposits into offshore accounts in smaller increments until it was gone and high-tail it off this continent! You could afford a small army with that kinda moolah in less wealthy countries. Oh, and buy lots of bug spray.

You did the right thing. Aside from the fine print in your direct deposit contract, God is your judge.

The legalities are that you must pay it back, as you have done. You are not entitled to keep monies given to you in error in such fashion.
