Is that sound practice at times?

Unfortunately this is an academic exercise because I'll never make $250,000 profit on a home, but I'd like to know if a minor improvement, like adding a $30 fan in the bathroom ceiling, raises the cost basis of a primary residence.

Thank you,
Houyhnhnm

I'm an international student studying in the USA. I applied for a credit card, but was declined. Apparently I didn't have any tradelines. What is that, and what does that mean? What can I do?

Unfortunately this is an academic exercise because I'll never make $250,000 profit on a home, but I'd like some clarification on which of these improvements will increase the cost basis of a primary residence:

1. Upgrade of existing item, such as replacing a Formica countertop with marble. IRS would probably say that's maintenance/replacement, but by normal accounting that's a capital improvement.

2. Replace item that was defective when house was purchased. For example, if the roof leaks when you buy it and it's not reasonable to repair it, it would be fair that getting your house to functional condition would be part of your cost of acquiring a primary residence. Obviously it would be cleaner if you could get the original owner to replace the roof and pass on the cost in the purchase price, but that's not always practical.

3. Repair defects in a newly-purchased house. Again it would be fair that repairing a leaky roof would be part of the acquisition cost.

I am a Junior in college working towards a Bachelor's degree in Biology and I've decided I want to work for a Biotechnology company.

Does anyone know of any such companies that hire for co-ops and/or internships? I know Genzyme does. And they have a branch where I live but I don't know if that specific branch hires for co-ops and internships, so I'd like to know about more companies.

I have heard many different opinions on this but little strong evidence. If a guest punches a hole in the wall can the hotel charge their credit card for repair? If they steal a coffee maker or bedspread, can the hotel charge them for it without their signature?

I want something:

that appeals to all ages and genders
Is short and catchy
Really applies to the business
Is friendly
Doesn't sound too unhealthy j/k

I have been looking for a better paying job for the last few months. I get the interviews but I never get the job. I have my Associate's Degree and am going back to school to get my Bachelor's. (I can't go back yet because I have no money!) I know all the computer applications. I know how to be a secretary. Answering phones, I have done many times. Yet, still nothing. Is it all about the connections? Is it all about how someone looks?

I always get stuck at these really deadend retail positions. The ones where the managers are my age (22). Is this just because the demand for people with Bachelor's Degrees and even Master's Degrees?

Hi. I've read questions/answers here about cancelling credit cards after paying them off and how it can be bad.

Well if I keep them will I be charged for anythign even if there is no balance? Do I chop up the ones I do not use and just leave the account open?

What if I have a Best Buy card? That is the same as a credit card right?

....being a member of a Trade Union will answer all their employment problems?

I don't understand!
Everytime there is a question relating to employment, there is at least one answer to suggest that being a member of a Trade Union will solve all their problems....despite there being increasing levels of Employment law to protect the employee in the workforce.

I understand that there are some rogue employers out there...but why not just simply as the Personnel or HR Department! They can't just make a mockery of employees for the fun of it!

It makes me made that there is such an "us v them" attitude out there between employers and employees....

What do you think?

I'm genuinely interested to hear both arguments here!
