A bank can legally take money out of your existing account that is legally owed to them.

If you no longer bank with them, you should have no problem cashing your check. However, since you are an employee of the school district, they may run an audit and discover that you do owe a past due debt.

This could cause a problem with your employer. California is a state that can legally garnish your wages. If this is the route that the bank takes, you can be sure you will be assessed with additional fees and expenses.

Your best bet is to be up front with the bank and arrange to make monthly payments. If you take this approach, you might find that they will accept reasonable payments that will not break you.

In addition, by clearing your good name will only open opportunities that may take you to a higher level.

One thing is for sure, bad credit leads to NO OPPORTUNITY.

Ask yourself, would you rather have the bank chasing you into your future - or - would you rather have the bank help you build a better future.

Keep your good name, meaning your good credit. You just don't ever know when that opportunity is going to knock. You are best to be prepared.

God Bless.

Let me guess have to cash the checks there because you cannot open a new account because of checkfax the site where banks see if you owe other banks? You will get caught maybe not at first but it will happen better to solve this problem take the hit and get you financial life back together, and yes it is on your credit score, and if working for a school district could affect your employment

You were lied to...they can, they will (and they SHOULD) take your money. Since you readily admit you owe them $550, is there some reason you think you SHOULDN'T have to pay it back?

If I had borrowed $500 from you a year ago, would it be okay for me to assume I did not owe it to you any more because I had gotten away with not paying it back for 12 months? I don't get your logic!

I don't know if they can take money from the checks. I do know they can, and should, refuse to do ANY business with you until you pay them. That would include refusing to cash your checks.
