Hi all,
It's tax time and we are in a situation where we are considering moving $4k from an individual investment account (stock) into Roth IRA. The question is: What are the tax implications of such a transfer and if it is a prudent move?

I heard that I have to take out an estimated tax amount in every paycheck so that I have money for WI taxes since I live there and IL can't take any taxes out of my check. I'm not exactly sure how this works...can anyone help me to understand!?!?!?

"escrow" amount for the month was $31.38 less than it's been all last year. My question (embarrasingly asked) is, what exactly "escrow" and why would it go down? Is that a good thing? I mean, I'm happy i am paying a little less, but just don't understand. Will this continue? I am clearly not very knowledgeable about all of this. Thanks for the help to those who reply.

We are looking at purchasing a parcel of land, we called a realtor who informed us there is a "friend" of his that is selling a parcel in the same area that is not on the market yet. With my knowledge of the web, I did property research and found this "friend" to me another realtor in the same office. I have tried to find information about what to watch for in this situation or how we (the buyer) get the best deal. So any serious help will be appreciated.

im 21 years old and have been working FACTORY since 18 after highschool. i chose to take a year off and relax and work and then go to college in the fall. that never happened. anyways im 21 now and ive applied every place i can think of meaning manufacturing wise and temp services in the area. im in debt of about $3000 and i just want to pay it all off and FINALLY GO TO SCHOOL AND EARN A DEGREE SO I CAN COME BACK AND DONT HAVE TO WORK SO HARD AND HURT MY BACK EVERY NIGHT FOR THE PAST YEARS. PLEASE I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. FRIENDS CANT DEPEND ON ANYMORE THESE DAYS. We had our taxes done last week and the $$ was direct deposited into our account already. When I got home yesterday there was a w-2 in the mail from unemplyment I received for the month of January that I COMPLETELY forgot about $2000 with 0 taken out for federal so obviously I owe something, but I dont know how do I start all over if they have already been done and even already got my refund, or should I just wait and see if they even catch it and then pay it when they catch it????

I am raising my granddaughter byself due to my daughters murder. I was in a wreck in the summer of 2005 and workmans comp. has recently cut me off. I have surgery schedule in a couple of months and hope to have my benefits started back after that to help me out. Recently I received a letter saying to pay my car note or they will come and pick it up, along with me being 1 month behind on my rent. Please if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I mean, since when has it become a virtue to love to be stressed out from impossible deadlines and unrealistic working conditions?

Why have we accepted this as a success formula? It seems to be more of a request from the ever increasing greed of business owners...And please don't lay out that it about the raise in competition in the industry... I don't buy that....its just a corporate cry! I mean corporation have never made as high of profits!! So why do we buy into it?

I am going back to school to get my accounting degree. My teacher doesn't teach from the book, but assigns homework from our text book. He showed us one problem and gave us the answer for practice. Company A 75,000 shares at $5 par value, and 8% cumulative perferred stock and $200,000 share of $1 par value common stock. Last year, the company had no dividends, but this year the company has $108,000. What does each class of stock receive?
My teacher said that the Preferred stockholders get $30,000 for last year and this year. The common stockholders get $48,000.

A different problem says that company A consists of 40,000 shares of noncumulative 7.5% preferred stock with $10 par calue and 100,000 shares of common stock with $1 par value. What does each class get for the following years?
2003 - $10,000
2004 - $24,000
2005 - $100,000
2006 - $196,000
The books says that the answer is $94,000 paid to preferred stock. Can anyone tell me why the two are calculated differently?
